Bush commuted Scooter Libby’s sentence today. This does not heal the nation, as Ford’s pardon of Nixon was erroneously said to have done. This does not put bad times to rest for the greater good. This is removing the justice system from accountability over executive abuse. Think about this if you want to disagree with me about what this means: Scooter Libby was not convicted of outing Valerie Plame, even though that is why the whole investigation began in the first place. He was convicted of lying about it. He perjured himself, deliberately, with full knowledge of what he was doing.
- He lied and he was caught.
- He lied and then was put on trial for it.
- He lied and was convicted of it.
- He lied and was sentenced to serve time for it.
- He tried to appeal that sentence for more time but also lost that appeal.
George W. Bush just proved that he condones ruining a person’s livelihood and lying to cover it up. This is the good man, the moral man, the Christian man? Platitudes. Bush is a pox upon this nation. And he still may pardon Libby, which will wipe out the conviction on top of that.
Defend that. Anyone. Defend it.
