I attempt to keep my news options broad for a balanced view of the world, so I watch the Tagesschau podcast every day that I can, in addition to reading the various national and international news feeds (such as AP wire and Reuters, before they can be cannibalized) and newsblogs from around the Internets. I do this because I want to maintain and enhance my understanding of common German, which is the primary reason my home page is Der Spiegel. But I also do it because I often see things that register loudly. For example, I’m watching a piece on a NATO security conference and I see Angela Merkel speaking, I see Vladimir Putin speaking (the now-widely reported words of the danger of the “one single master” of the United States), I see Robert Gates speaking, and I see John McCain speaking.
OK, this is where I am going to stop. This is a NATO security conference, in which national heads of that organization have come together to discuss its relationship with Russia, among other things. The United States is a “nation at war,” in which the suppression of documents and the wire tapping of its citizens is justified in the name of national security. And NATO is a front line in security.
Now, back my point. John McCain is there. Robert Gates is there. President Bush is not there.
WORST PRESIDENT EVER!
